Quartz: How to prevent scratches

When you purchase an engineered surface, you are buying a stone that has been manufactured to endure years of kitchen wear and tear. Quartz countertops are engineered with high-strength minerals, producing stones that surpass granite in durability.

How durable is quartz?

Quartz has a hardness rating of 7 on the Mohs scale (with a diamond being a 10 and talc being a 1). This means that only something harder than quartz will be able to scratch quartz.

So, what can’t scratch quartz?

Glass has a hardness of 5.5, meaning that quartz will scratch glass! This, incidentally, is why sand can scratch your eyeglasses.

Your fingernail has a hardness of 2.5. No worries about scratching your quartz countertops!

Iron nail
With a hardness of 4, you could drag an iron nail across your countertop (but you really shouldn’t!) and not worry about a scratch.

Stainless steel blades have a hardness of around 5.5, so your kitchen knife shouldn’t be a problem on your countertop.

There are few things in your household that are harder than quartz, but they certainly exist. Here are some materials that could damage your quartz countertops.

Hardened steel
Hardened steel is usually found in industrial tools, like drill bits. The steel has been hardened by heat and additional alloys. Hardened steel can have a Mohs rating of up to 7.5, so it can damage your countertops.

Sapphires and Rubies have a hardness rating of 8, which is harder than quartz. Dragging a sapphire ring across the surface could damage your countertop.

Diamonds have a hardness of 10; they are the hardest mineral on the Mohs scale. If you have a diamond file, a diamond polishing pad, or a diamond ring, it can and will indent the surface of your quartz countertops.

How to prevent scratches on your quartz countertops?

The great news is that, unless you have a lot of hardened steel appliances or diamond-coated knives, there isn’t a lot you need to do to prevent scratches to your quartz countertops. We do, however, recommend that you use cutting boards whenever cooking and chopping, just to be safe.

You never know when that knife is actually made of hardened, tempered steel.
